REFEDS strengthens ties with ORCID
13 October 2015 | Amsterdam, Netherlands
The research and education federation group, REFEDS, has strengthened its collaboration with ORCID, the not-for-profit organisation that manages personal identifiers for researchers. During the 30th REFEDS meeting, on 4 October 2015, participants from both groups agreed to start a joint working group to develop a common work plan.
During the meeting, which was attended by more than 80 people, the technical director of ORCID, Laura Paglione, presented ideas for the working group, which will address the need for community use-cases for ORCID and investigate how the ORCID identifier can be used within federations to add value to researchers in terms of identity, research portfolios and reputation management.
Participants also heard news that
the Vietsch Foundation has joined the list of REFEDS sponsors: it has decided to provide funding that will allow the group to continue to develop
FedLab, the suite of tools to test compliance with protocols such as SAML and
The REFEDS meeting took place during the
Technology Exchange 2015 (TechEx15) event, hosted by Internet2 in Cleveland, Ohio, and provided a good opportunity to discuss the latest developments within the community. An important discussion centred around finding a way for REFEDS to talk to commercial providers with 'one voice'. This would take the reach of REFEDS beyond the research environment, and the fact that many federations agree to use REFEDS as their channel of representation clearly demonstrates the value that REFEDS has in aggregating requirements.
The meeting participants shared operational best practices and discussed
MET (Metadata Explorer Tool) and the value it brings to federation operators. They were also informed about the progress being made within several parts of the GÉANT (GN4-1) Project, the
AARC project, and other relevant activities in the trust and identity space, such as
ISOC Trust and Identity.
