2nd GTS Tech+Futures Workshop, Utrecht, Feb. 16-17, 2016

After a very successful 1st Workshop in Copenhagen, the second "GTS Tech+Futures Workshop" took place in Utrecht on Feb. 16-17, 2016. There were almost 30 attendees and also remote participants who were interested in the evolution of the GÉANT Testbeds Service and wanted to follow up on new issues, the building of the GTS roadmap, new features involving SDN virtualization and also testbed federation.

During the workshop the community of testbed users had the opportunity to share experiences and see how their know-how and proficiency can affect GÉANT and the GÉANT Testbeds Service in the future. The workshop was also open and of great interest to researchers who may not have had a chance to try out the Testbeds Service and were new to GTS, but could benefit from such a network platform to support their experiments.

The sessions of the event addressed the following issues (among others):

  • Motivation, project overview, current status

  • Roadmap for GN4 Phase 2

  • Federation with other FIRE and GENI testbeds

  • Operational and administrative issues of running a virtual network service.

Just like in the first workshop, users presented some of their work and also put an emphasis on what type of features are needed and would be most welcome. The requests ranged from support of time services to more flexibility when it comes to flavors of virtual machines. Other well debated topics were security testbeds, bandwidth allocation, monitoring and performance issues.

In each session there were key discussions on a long term vision for GTS and/or generalized virtualization capabilities within the GEANT 2020+ timeframe and the strategic capability goals that should guide growth and enhancements in the SGA2 timeframe. The results of the first and second workshop will be incorporated into a GTS Roadmap document to be made available later this spring. There are plans for similar annual events to be held in future, so please watch for announcements.
