GÉANT and NextGEOSS – enabling access to Earth Observation data through eduTEAMS
The GÉANT Association, the leading collaboration on network and related infrastructure and services for the benefit of research and education, and NextGEOSS, The European contribution to global earth observation system of systems (GEOSS) and a prominent project of H2020, have established a collaboration in order to maximize their objectives for connecting NextGEOSS services with eduGAIN via eduTEAMS.
eduGAIN’s main objective is to connect identity federations around the world, simplifying access to content, services and resources for the global research and education community.
NextGEOSS project, offers a space where users can connect in order to access Earth Observation and deploy applications. This platform provides several cloud services, seamlessly connected into an integrated ecosystem that supports Earth Observation based applications.
After successful integration activities between the respective partners of both projects,
GÉANT, ELECNOR DEIMOS and
RedIRIS acting as registrar of the platform in eduGAIN, NextGEOSS services and their functionality will be expanded.
By means of this joint effort, NextGEOSS will be able to offer the possibility of using institution credentials from hundreds of research and development institutions around the world, such as universities or research centres and give them access to its core services.
Now, through this new collaboration with eduTEAMS and the connection to eduGAIN, NextGEOSS Data Hub opens up to R&E communities worldwide. The collaboration demonstrates the mutual benefits of eduTEAMS and eduGAIN for research and education communities, fostering growth and accessibility to Earth Observation data.
eduTEAMS enables research communities to securely access and share common resources and services, eduTEAMS enables research communities to securely authenticate and identify their users, organize them in groups, assign them roles and centrally manage access rights for their resources, eduTEAMS uses existing federated identities and leverages the ubiquitous presence of eduGAIN federated identities.
The NextGEOSS project, a European contribution to GEOSS, proposes to develop the next generation centralised hub for Earth Observation data, where the users can connect to access data and deploy EO-based applications. The concept revolves around providing the data and resources to the users’ communities, together with Cloud resources, seamlessly connected to provide an integrated ecosystem for supporting applications. A central component of NextGEOSS is the strong emphasis put on engaging the communities of providers and users, and bridging the space in between.
