DI4R 2018 – Digital Infrastructures for Research

The third edition of the annual Digital Infrastructures for Research (DI4R) conference was held at the University of Lisbon campus in Lisbon, Portugal from 9-11 October.

Building on the success of DI4R2016 (Krakow) and DI4R2017 (Brussels), DI4R2018 promised to be the biggest and best yet. Jointly organised by EOSC-hub, GÉANT, OpenAIRE and PRACE, the event delivered a packed programme of sessions, posters and networking opportunities to Europe’s researchers, developers and service providers – leading to brainstorming and discussions on how best to serve the user base.

This year's co-chairs were Volker Guelkow (from DESY) and Sinéad Ryan from (Trinity College).

“We consider DI4R as a very important conference since users, providers and large infrastructure organizations get together and can discuss cross disciplinary approaches and solutions for the burning problems of scientific work. The key feature of DI4R is the exchange of ideas and this happens through networking the people.”

Volker Guelzow, DESY #CoChair

“Technology transfer of academic software to industry should be straightforward and (almost) universal - so why is it not and what can we do about it?”

Mike Payne, University of Cambridge #KeynoteSpeaker

“Quantum computing should be based on facts, not on myths.”

Kristel Michielsen, Jülich Supercomputing Centre & RWTH Aachen University #KeynoteSpeaker

“Climate prediction is one of the most computationally demanding applications due to the huge simulations required. Nowadays, data-centric applications pose new challenges for research infrastructures.”

Jose Manuel Gutierrez, Unican, IPCC & CSIC #KeynoteSpeaker

“It is an incredible opportunity  to be at DI4R conference to exchange ideas and expand collaborations to develop, integrate and to transform digital information to overcome one of humanities biggest challenges:  the biodiversity crisis.”

Dalia A. Conde, Species360 & University of Southern Denmark #KeynoteSpeaker

DI4R17

DI4R 2017 showcased the policies, processes, best practices, data and services that, leveraging today’s initiatives – national, regional, European and international – are the building blocks of the European Open Science Cloud and European Data Infrastructure. The overarching goal of this event was to demonstrate how open science, higher education and innovators can benefit from these building blocks, and ultimately to advance integration and cooperation between initiatives.
