The Eastern Partnership (EaP) is a regional and multilateral initiative between the EU and six partner countries in its immediate Eastern neighbourhood: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine. The partnership aims to provide support and assistance for reforms in the region in the fields of democracy, human rights, market economy, sustainability and governance.
As part of its digital agenda the Eastern Partnership recognises the importance of e-infrastructures in promoting digital inclusion and enabling participation of EaP countries in Horizon 2020 projects.
EaPConnect will realise this vision for the research and education community across the region and beyond.
First launched in June 2015 as the 5-year 'Eastern Partnership Connect' project, the 2nd EaPConnect - 'EU4Digital: Connecting Research and Education Communities' - is delivering digital infrastructure and solutions to the EaP research and education communities. The project integrates the national research and education networks with the pan-European GÉANT network, decreasing the digital divide, and facilitates the participation of EaP scientists, students and academics in global R&E collaborations. The project supports partners in the deployment of services and their integration with GÉANT and other European e-infrastructure services.
Around 2 million scientists, academics and students at more than 700 institutions across the region can benefit from the connectivity and servcies provided. By enabling fast and reliable exchange of high volumes of data between scientists in the EaP countries and their peers in Europe and further afield, EaPConnect facilitates collaborative activities in areas such as environmental monitoring, telemedicine and e-learning, and helps to reduce brain drain from the region while enabling researchers to contribute to their local societies.
EaPConnect is funded by the European Union within the EU4Digital initiative under Grant Agreement number ENI/2019/407-452. EU4Digital promotes key areas of the digital economy and society, in line with EU norms and practices.
