An important component of GÉANT's innovation programme has been the Open Call projects that brought in fresh ideas, new expertise, and supported new uses of the network.
The Open Call programme 2014 – 2015 was part of the previous iteration of the GÉANT Project, GN3plus. It funded 21 new projects at the cutting-edge of innovation, and brought 30 new project partners from industry and academia.
Under the guidance of a GÉANT joint research activity, each Open Call project was aligned to one of four technology categories:
Applications and Tools - supporting advanced research activities and projects;
Authentication - helping support secure end-to-end authentication of systems and people;
Network Architecture and Optical Projects - studying future networking systems;
SDN - exploring Software Defined Networking potential to meet new networking demands.
Results from Open Call projects were fed directly into the joint research activities for integration to their current or future work programmes, which in turn feeds directly into the development of new services and tools – part of GÉANT's continuous cycle of innovation.
High performance results
The results from the Open Call projects exceeded expectations in all areas.
